Unable to Open Semantic Model
Hello Everyone!
I recently deployed a semantic model on Fabric using Tabular Editor, with the connection to an on-prem SQL database in Import Mode.
While I am able to refresh the model and create reports, I encounter the following error when trying to open the data model:
Underlying Error: {"code":"ExternalServiceFailed","pbi.error":{"code":"ExternalServiceFailed","parameters":{},"details":[{"code":"ModelingServiceError_Reason","detail":{"type":1,"value":"Error in ModelingEngineHost"}},{"code":"ModelingServiceError_Location","detail":{"type":1,"value":"ModelingEngineHost"}},{"code":"ModelingServiceError_ExceptionType","detail":{"type":1,"value":"InvalidOperationException"}},{"code":"ModelingServiceError_Message","detail":{"type":1,"value":"Sequence contains more than one element"}}]}}
Does anyone know the cause of this issue?

Please follow below steps to resolve the issue;
1.Look for duplicate partitions, roles, KPIs, tables, or measures with the same name.
2.Use Tabular Editor’s "Validate Model" feature before deploying to catch any structural issues early.
3.Opening the model locally may reveal more detailed validation errors.
4.If the issue persists, export objects and rebuild the model from scratch to eliminate any corrupted or invalid metadata.

Please follow below steps for Partitioned Tables in Import Mode;
1. Make sure each partition has a unique name and non-overlapping data range — duplicate or conflicting partitions can cause model load issues.
2.Use Tabular Editor’s “Validate Model” feature to check for partition or metadata issues before deploying.
3.Test partitions incrementally — start with just one or two and add more gradually to identify any specific problematic partition.
4.Stick to a clear partitioning strategy (e.g., monthly slices with filters) and avoid empty or invalid partitions that may cause errors during model load.

I’ve identified that the issue is related to partitioned tables. For example, when I load only the dimension tables (each with a single partition), the model opens without any issues. However, when I include the Fact table — which contains multiple partitions — the model fails to open.
The challenge is that my model uses Import storage mode, and the data source is on-premises. Partitioning significantly benefits this setup, especially for managing data refresh performance and volume.
Do you have any suggestions on how to handle this, or best practices for working with multiple partitions in Import mode?

What do you mean by trying to open the data model?
Are you referencing the same table multiple time. Found a comment on this blog
