URL in the data source credentials in template apps isn't updating to the latest version

The latest version of our template app had some changes made to its url using the M function WebContents() in power query. After updating the template app to the latest version , when a user clicks on Connect your data, the URL in data source credentials shows the new updated url but then when you click Sign In it reverts back to the old url and then fails to connect. I suspect it is because PowerBi is doing some static analysis on the query/code to verify the user's credentials. How do you point PBI to a new query to perform its static analysis? Or is there something else happening here that I am missing.

I should point out the clicking on the dataset settings and Editing credentials from there does not fail. However the logicial step is to click on the "Connect to data" button after installing a template app and it fails updating the data source credentials from there.
