Trouble updating in Power BI service

Hi!

I have a Power BI report that I've "inherited" from another analyst. It works fine to update it in the desktop, but the scheduled refresh keeps failing and I'm struggling to figure out why that is. Any help would be appreciated! This is the error message:

Hi @ines1902 ,

The error message suggests that the issue is related to a Power Query transformation, specifically with a function that is not being recognized correctly in the Power BI Service.

Possible Causes and Fixes:

  1. Power Query Function Issue

    • The error states:

"We cannot convert the value FunctionFunctionFunction to type Function."

    • This could mean that a custom function in Power Query is not resolving properly in the Power BI Service but works in Power BI Desktop.
    • Fix:
      • Open Power Query Editor (Transform Data) in Power BI Desktop.
      • Look for any custom functions being used in transformations.
      • Ensure that all functions are properly defined and invoked.
      • Try removing and reapplying function transformations.
  2. Gateway Configuration Issue (If applicable)

    • If your data source requires a gateway (e.g., SQL Server, on-premises Excel, etc.), ensure that it is configured properly in Power BI Service.
    • Fix:
      • Go to Power BI Service → SettingsManage Gateways and check if the gateway is online and properly set up.
  3. Cloud vs. Desktop Data Handling Differences

    • Power BI Desktop can sometimes process queries differently than Power BI Service.
    • Certain data types or query steps might work locally but fail when published.
    • Fix:
      • Check for steps in Power Query that might be dependent on local execution.
      • Ensure that all tables and columns are properly loaded.
  4. Credentials Issue

    • If the dataset requires authentication, incorrect credentials can cause failures.
    • Fix:
      • In Power BI Service, go to Settings → Datasets → Edit Credentials and ensure the correct authentication method is used.
  5. Query Folding Issue

    • If your Power Query transformations prevent query folding, it could lead to failures in Power BI Service.
    • Fix:
      • Test disabling some complex steps and reloading the dataset.
