Tips for rolling out Copilot in Power BI

Hello,

We are in the process of rolling out Copilot in Power BI to a group of business users who have never used Copilot or tools like ChatGPT before. I would appreciate any lessons learned or tips to help make the rollout smooth and effective

  • Hi vanusha ,

Please see the below link for co-pilot requirement / pre-requisite.

Ensure the data with quality and user friendly naming convention for copilot to work effectively.

These are couple of important scenarios where we can utilize copilot.

    1. Filling up description for any dax measure using copilot.

    2. Give a narration for a dax, and copilot would generate the dax formula

    3. Ask an explaination of existinf dax formula

    4.Give summarization of report

5.Ask questions about data in the model from copilot

If this post helps, please accept this as a solution. Appreciate your kudos.

    Thanks,

    Pallavi

  • You're welcome! It sounds like you have a solid plan in place with self-paced training and open office workshops—those are excellent strategies to drive adoption.

During the hands-on workshops, provide users with real-world scenarios or challenges to solve using Copilot. Gamify the experience by giving small prizes for creative or efficient solutions.
Role-Based Exercises: Tailor exercises to specific roles (e.g., finance, HR, sales) so participants can see how Copilot directly relates to their daily tasks.

Pair confident users with those who might need extra help during workshops.
User Spotlights: Let users who adopt Copilot quickly share their favorite tips or examples during follow-up workshops or office hours.

  • Hi vanusha - Rolling out Copilot in Power BI to business users who are new to AI-driven tools like ChatGPT can be an exciting opportunity to enhance their analytics capabilities.

Purpose and Benefits: Explain what Copilot is, why it’s being introduced, and how it will make their work easier (e.g., generating insights, automating repetitive tasks, or exploring data).
Scope: Clarify what Copilot can and cannot do to set realistic expectations.
    2. Provide Hands-On Training
Interactive Demos: Showcase real-world use cases relevant to their work, such as generating visuals, summarizing data insights, or creating DAX measures.
Workshops: Organize short, practical sessions where users can try Copilot on their own data.
Scenario-Based Practice: Teach them to phrase queries effectively (e.g., “Explain sales trends for the last quarter”).
    3. Create Supporting Materials
Quick Reference Guides: Provide simple guides on how to interact with Copilot (e.g., examples of prompts or common questions to ask).
FAQs: Anticipate questions or concerns, such as data privacy, accuracy of insights, or limitations of Copilot.
Cheat Sheets: Include sample prompts for common tasks like summarizing data, creating visuals, or generating calculations.

Use real datasets to validate Copilot’s responses in your specific environment.
Manage Expectations: Reinforce that Copilot assists with insights but doesn’t replace human judgment.

We do have self-paced training modules and we are also going to facilitate hands-on workshops in open office setup for more adoption. Thanks for the FAQs

  • That's a great initiative, and starting with a focused group is smart. From my experience, the key is to anchor the training in specific, common business questions they already have, rather than just showcasing features. This helps users immediately see the practical value.

I've also worked on embedding similar conversational AI directly into Power BI reports to lower the adoption barrier, as users can get answers without switching contexts or needing separate licenses. If you're curious about an alternative approach that works inside existing dashboards, you might find this quick demo interesting:
