Hi guys,
for the last few days, my dataset would not refresh in the online service. It runs for more than 2 hours, then fails.
When I refresh from my desktop, it takes about 20 minutes.
I have been using this dataset for the last 2 years without any major issues. I have not done any changes in the dataset for a while.
Any idea what could be wrong all of the sudden?
UPDATE: I see this problem across multiple accounts and datasets which are totally unrelated.
Thx!
DZ
I'm having the same problem currently.
My dataset is small, 7Mb all the connections are API's for a year all schedule refreshes happened with no problems, with about 15 - 20 minutes to finish.
Recently I started to receive error messages about timeout, I didn't any changes in my dataset, now the refresh time takes more than 2 hours.
When I do this refresh using Power BI Desktop, it's all ok, it takes 15 minutes.
Can someone help me in this case? My report need to be refreshed 8 times a day.
hi, @danzrust
Have you got the latest version gateway installed?
Since you could refresh from my desktop, it takes about 20 minutes.
Please check schedule the refresh. and if the gateway works well.
Ensure that you have got enough CPUs (As I have found when processing Excel files, if there are a lot of applied steps in the Query Editor, it will consume almost all the CPUs).
Also ensure that you have got enough memory, as all the Query Editor steps are applied where the Gateway is installed.
And please refer to big query/quotas and check if the refresh request exceeds the limits.
If you still have this issue for Power BI, you'd better create a support ticket in Power BI Support to get further help.
Best Regards,
Lin
I not using any gateway. I am using the native Big Query connection in the service, no need for gateway.
I talked to support, they barely speak English. I understood every 2nd word. I am supposed to send them some traces from browser when the next fail happens. But I don't think that's gonna help.
Bottom line:
The refresh used to take about 20 minutes on desktop and in the service until the last week. I have been using this dataset for the last 2 years. Something changed last week in the service behind the scenes. Refresh in the service now takes > 2 hours and my refresh is failing in the service. Refresh on the desktop still takes only 20 minutes.
I see this behavior across 2 different accounts and 2 completely different datasets. Also, there is @matt_nm having the exactly same problem.
The issue is gone. My datasets are refreshing again.
No changes done in the datasets. Only talked to few more times to MS support.
They don't know what exactly has changed this morning but at least it's working now.
Too bad. Issue is back again.
Hi, I'm also getting this issue when connecting to an on prem SQL database. My dataset has been working fine for the past month and suddenly started getting this error message. In my case, the table referenced in the error message is always different. I have set command timeouts on all my queries but still getting the error.
Update from me: My dashboards have been generally working for me again.
I update them 6 times a day and I maybe get one failure per day.
Update: I am seeing this problem across multiple datasets in different accounts. They have 1 on common - they pull data from BigQuery (but not limited to BigQuery).
The largest dataset is trying to download around 1.5M rows from BigQuery. I'd say nothing too extreme.

I have also found this over the last week or so. I have a dataset which consists of data pulled only from BigQuery but I've been finding that my online refresh keeps on failing with the same error message as reported here. Things had been working fine in the weeks before this though.
Refreshing via Power BI Desktop works perfectly ok though. I've checked all the credentials, etc online and schedule refresh times. I have also deleted the dataset from online and republished but continue to have the same issue as is being reported here.
Any update @v-lili6-msft? Many reports are failing for me. I am paying for something which is NOT working currently.

hi @v-lili6-msft ,
this is wierd. Has anything changed recently? I can't see why my issue would start in multiple different accounts at the same time while the datasets have completely different sizes.
Also, unlike in your referred post, I am not using Sql.Databases as source. I am using BigQuery.
