There was an error communicating with analysis services. error in the high-level relational engine.

Hello everyone,   I'm working with Excel connected to a Power BI semantic model. I'm using it to insert a table in Excel by "CreatedDate" (as rows), with "Sales" and "Count of Customers" in values....

    Hi everyone,

    Thanks for all the answers! I solved the problem.

    The issue was coming from using the "Analyze in Excel Online" feature, and I was also seeing the same problems when using Excel on my laptop. What I did was open the semantic model that contains the 3 joined semantic models and tried to replicate the same setup inside it. This way the error appeared explicitly, so I could identify and fix it properly. Then I tried connecting again.

    For some reason, when connecting directly to the semantic model, the error message wasn't displaying the full details.

Hi julsr 

 

From my understanding, the reason is you're joining three semantic models and then using a direct query connection and this has to grow across the multiple semantic models which is potentially causing the issue. I would recommend instead of trying to go across the three semantic models, you put all the data in a single semantic model. Just as a side note, when you are trying to do accounts of distinct customers where the sales is greater than zero, this is a very compute intensive operation also.
