Streaming Datasets / Push Dataset - Visualization options

Hello,

after hours of investigation and research, try and error with Streaming Datasets, we are not able to achieve our targets.

There are some facts that we hope you could confirm as correct:

- A Streaming Dataset is not the same as a Push Dataset. The difference is that with streaming datasets it is only possible to use pre-defined visuals, given in the dialog when adding a Dashboard tile, and not the full bandwidth of features that you usually have in Power BI Desktop / Designer mode in the Power BI Service.

(see also https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-real-time-streaming#push-dataset)

- The Streaming Dataset becomes a Push Dataset (sometimes called Hybrid dataset), as soon as the check for "Historic data analysis" is set.  Now also historic values are saved.

Now what is our problem?

When we create a report whether in Power BI Desktop / Power BI Service and connect to our Streaming Dataset, no data is shown, although our Python script is running and sending out data all the time repeatedly. Also manual refresh shows no data.

The endpoint of the dataset is also reachable and we proved that we can actually send data and receive it. We did this with the standard visualizations that are offered when adding new tiles in a Dashboard based on the streaming dataset.

Further, when connecting to the dataset withPower BI Desktop, we can see in the bottom right corner: "Connected live to the Power BI dataset...".

It seems that only when using the "Create report"-function in Power BI service (clicking on three dots at the streaming dataset) a working connection to the data is established and it is possible to see data. But with this, as described above, we have too less reporting functionalities and missing visuals. For example, we want to use Map Visuals.

Any ideas what we are doing wrong or missed?

Thanks & Best regards

Johann

Hi @Johann_32 ,

In fact this is a feature not supported by custom real-time Streaming Datasets.

If you would like to suggest some feature improvements, you may also vote the idea and comment here  to improve this feature. It is a place for customers provide feedback about Microsoft Office products . What’s more, if a feedback is high voted there by other customers, it will be promising that Microsoft Product Team will take it into consideration when designing the next version in the future.
