Slow rending Paginated reports in power bi service

Hi ,

We have devleoped paginated reports and publish them into power bi service. The reports in power bi service are very slow.

Environment details:

Created Embedded Gen 2 capacity with A1 SKU and assigned that capacity to paginated reports workspace.

Datasource for paginated reports is Azure sql database(sql quires are optimized and not taking time).

We have tried with increasing capacity from A1 to A6 ,but no use.

Can some one tell me why paginated reports having performance issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Everyone.

I am facing the same issue: paginated reports are fast in Power BI report builder but they are veru slow and taking almost double the time in power bi service for rendering.  There is no gateway and I am directly connection to the SQL server database stored procedures.

Have any of you been able to reach any conclusion to solve the performance problem in PBI service?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi, @Anonymous

Did you use the paginated reports with the Azure SQL database using the gateway? Because it will lead to poor performance even with Azure Database. This is a case that I met before that explains this problem in detail:

https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Service/Extremely-slow-paginated-reports-due-to-high-connection-opening/m-p/1712251

If you didn’t use a gateway, you can follow this document to troubleshoot report performance in Power BI:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/guidance/report-performance-troubleshoot

Thank you very much!

Hi Robert,

we have same senarion, using paginated reports with azure sql data source. we are not using any gateways to connect azure sql database.

From power bi reports builder reports are running 1-2 sec,but in power bi service it is taking 20-30 sec for the same reports.

there was an option in paginated reports designer to indicate that all queries should be executed serially using the same connection (no open/close) ---this options is not available in paginated report builder.

Any idea?

thanks in advance

Hi @v-robertq-msft and @Anonymous

I am facing the same issue: paginated reports are fast in report builder but they are too slow in power bi service rendering and, especially, exporting the data to Excel

Have you been able to reach any conclusion to solve these performance problems?

Thanks in advance!!
