Sharing a pbix between multiple people using sharepoint or powerbi service

We have multiple users who will need to make changes to a pbix report.

There is a sharepoint site they can use to share the pbix, but sharepoint does not open the pbix in the power bi desktop application.

Similarily, there is no functionality in the power bi service to open/edit the pbix in the desktop app.

The only options i can see are:

  • enable folder sync with sharepoint. This is disabled due to security in our organization so is not an option.
  • have users download the pbix each time they wish to modify it.
This is a poor solution and is guaranteed to end up with multiple versions of the same report.

Is there an option i am missing here?
If not, is there any plans for Microsoft to improve the integration between powerbi and sharepoint?

You could try this approach to version control with SharePoint:

A non-SharePoint approach:

Personally, I track the Tabular Editor folder structure in Git similarly to this approach:

I think eventually the plan is that Microsoft is going to be putting all the data modeling into the web version of the product, but it's not there yet. If you don't have the ability to sync the folder, then I think you are stuck downloading/editing for now - you could opt to have your users check out the file so that people know when someone else is editing it, but you run into the problem of people not remembering to check it back in that way so it's not a perfect solution.
