Sharepoint Excel file refreshes in Desktop; errors in service refresh "File contains corrupted data"

I have a Sharepoint Excel file, which I'm connecting to via this method:

https://www.biinsight.com/quick-tips-connecting-to-excel-files-stored-in-sharepoint-online-from-powe...

It works fine to refresh on Desktop. And for several days, it was fine in the Power BI service. But now when refreshing in the service, it gives an error "File contains corrupted data".

I've tried

  • Deleting and republishing the PBIX file
  • Updating our on-premise data gateways to latest version (idk why this would matter given it's a cloud source, but eh)
  • Changing the sensitivy label on the sharepoint connection from public to 'none'

Opening the Sharepoint Excel file in desktop, then going to File > Info > Check for Issues (and accepting the changes) seems to have fixed it.

Something about custom XML - not really sure what that was about (though I suspect it's the Templify software we use), but not sure at all.
