I am glad to hear that you are excited to try this out! I suspect that the dataset you are trying to test falls under one of our limitations and that is why the 'Open data model' button is disabled. You can see a full list of our limitations for this experience here in our documentation: Edit data models in the Power BI service (preview) - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

To see which limitation your dataset falls under you can do the following steps:

Hover over the Open data model button in the dataset details page. This displays a tooltip indicating which limitation is causing the Open data model button to be disabled.

I put all of my measures in a separate folder. When I changed the name of this folder in PowerBI Service, the references broke on ALL of the visuals using those measures in a linked report. I didn't even change the measure names.

Hi @emlisa

Following the September feature summary, Data model editing in Power BI Service has now become GA.

But, I'm not able to find this setting in Admin Portal anymore.

And the Edit Model option is still greyed out in my org workspaces at datamodel level.

Can you help us with enabling this option at tenant level ?

Editing semantic models is enabled by default at the tenant level. Power BI administrators can disable this capability for the entire organization or for specific security groups using the setting available in the Power BI admin portal.

However, there is currently a known issue where this tenant-level setting may not appear correctly in the portal. The team is actively working to resolve this, and we apologize for the inconvenience in the meantime.

If you're seeing the "Edit Model" option greyed out, you can identify the specific limitation by hovering over the Open semantic model button on the semantic model details page. A tooltip will appear indicating which condition is preventing access. Hopefully, this helps clarify why you're unable to open models for editing in the web!

As a quick update, the known issue with the tenant-level setting has now been resolved. This should now behave as expected in the admin portal.

I'm glad that you are looking forward to the release! There are no plans at this time to support editing semantic models within the mobile app.

Hello, I am replying to the Feedback Form linked on the June 2025 Release Notes for Power Query editing in the web for import models (Preview)

Is this feature to using Power Query editing in the web for import available on the GCC cloud tenant? Or is it restricted to Microsoft Fabric? A colleague and I were excited to try this feature but was saddened that we could not find the Power Query button on the web. @emlisa

During the rollout of Power Query editing for import models, we encountered an unexpected issue that has delayed the release. The feature is still planned to ship within the next couple of weeks. Apologies for the delay and any inconvenience this may cause.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or feedback about editing semantic models in the web!

Hi Lisa,

Comign from the June 2025 Feature Summary blog, it directs me here for the "Power Query editing in the web for import models (Preview)", however, above is for "Data Modelling in PBI Service".

Also, its worth calling out, if you click “documentation” it takes you to “Edit data models in the Power BI service (preview)” blog - not a dedicated page for “Power Query editing in the web….”.

For the "Power Query editing in the web for import models (Preview)", when accessing the Power BI Service, going to an existing semantic model (import), I select "Open data model", go into "Editing" mode, however, I cannot see "Get data". Is this only avalable in some regions for now? Hopefully its not just me getting this wrong.

Also, one more bit of feedback. I can see this is being promoted as:

- Power Query was the final missing piece to unlock a truly complete, end-to-end authoring experience in the browser.

- Be possible to get data, transform data, and refresh your import models entirely on the web, with no need for Desktop.

To truly makes this end to end authoring expeirence in the browser or have no need for Desktop, we need to be able to start from a blank canvas in the Power BI Service. This feature (and others that bring Desktop experiences to the Service) all start from having an existing solution already in the Service (which would have come from PBI Desktop). My point is, go to app.powerbi.com > Select Get Data > List of Data Connectors > Transform > Model > DAX > Report. In short, for all those people not able to use PBI Desktop on Mac, can they truly get the same end to end experience from the Service as they can in Desktop?

Side note: Credit to team for bringing a lot of what was previosuly missing in the Service.

Thank you for your thoughtful message and for taking the time to explore the new capabilities. I appreciate your feedback and the opportunity to clarify a few things.

Power Query editing in the web for import models is a new capability being introduced as part of the existing Edit data models in the Power BI service experience. This includes the ability to get data and transform data for import models using Power Query, and refresh import models entirely in the browser. Because this capability is part of the broader semantic model editing experience, both the documentation and feedback links direct to the central page for editing data models in the web. This ensures all related functionality is covered in one place.

During rollout, we discovered an unexpected issue that has delayed the release of Power Query editing for import models in the web. We apologize for the delay and any corresponding confusion. The feature is still planned to ship in the next couple of weeks. Once available, as long as the workspace-level preview switch for “Users can edit data models in the Power BI service” is enabled, all related capabilities including Power Query editing will be available in your workspace.

You also raised an excellent point about the end to end authoring experience. While this release brings us significantly closer, we recognize that there are still some differences compared to Power BI Desktop. Today, the Create page in the Power BI Service supports creating net new semantic models only from Excel, CSV, and Enter Data connectors. We are actively working to enable additional connectors so users can create new import semantic models from scratch in the web from more sources. Stay tuned for updates in this space.

Thanks again for your feedback and for recognizing the progress so far! We look forward to hearing more from you as you try out these capabilities!

@emlisa

Good afternoon, I'm having multiple problems. I can't get the edit option to appear and open Power BI from the service.

Second problem: I can't edit the data models locally on my desktop. It tells me to activate XMLA, but I have it fully enabled. It's probably another error. When will these updates work properly?

I apologize for any frustrations you've experienced while testing this feature.

Regarding the 'Edit in Desktop' button, we are currently in the process of rolling out this functionality for Direct Lake models to be opened for editing in Desktop from the web entry point. While this rollout is ongoing, please continue to follow the steps outlined here in our documentation for opening a Direct Lake semantic model for live editing in Desktop.

As for the error message you received, could you confirm if the XMLA endpoint is enabled on the tenant and if the XMLA endpoint has Read Write access enabled on the capacity? Both of these settings are required for live editing Direct Lake models in Desktop. You can find more details on all requirements and permissions for live editing Direct Lake models in Desktop here in our documentation

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

I think the fact that this don't support Incremental refresh dashbaords is a miss. Everytime we need to do a change in a measure or column in our dashabord we need to repulish and then wait for the full refresh to load I have to wait 3 hours for the full refresh of the historical data and in the mean time there is only partial data out there. so small fix in a measure becomes a big issue because the fix can only be run at night so I dont affect other people using the dashbaord.

Thank you for sharing this feedback! It is valuable for us to hear that incremental refresh support will help unblock your core scenarios for editing data models in the service. This is part of our long term roadmap and hearing feedback from users like this helps us in our prioritization.

Hi, I am using API app insights data for my semantic model, In documents it is mentioned that data modeling is restricted for API option. Can this be enabled for API datasets too in the future?

We now support making changes using XMLA to a semantic model edited in the Power BI Service subject to limitations documented here. Hope this helps!

Hello emlisa,

Regarding the new release for October, I was expecting this:

CCUK22_1-1697991571600.png

Power BI is up to date on my laptop with the latest version:

Version: 2.122.746.0 64-bit (October 2023), and I am still experiencing the following issue:

CCUK22_0-1697991475116.png

Additionally, I noticed that you can't simply click on 'Home' in the Service. You have to open a report in the Service, click 'Edit', and then select 'Open Data Model'. Only after these steps, you can work with the model. I believe the instructions need to be reviewed.

Hi Carlos please stay tuned, support for 'Manage relationships' dialog is an improvement coming later this month. This new dialog will be supported specifically in the Service for this October release.

Regarding the 'Home' tab, this part of the blog is referring to the 'Home' tab of the ribbon specifically within the data model editting experience in the Service. There are several ways you can open your data model in the Service including the one you outlined, these are all described in our public documentation. Hope this helps!
