Setup Self Service for Super Users to do own PowerBI Reporting (PowerBi Pro)

Good day,

I would like some ideas on best way to implement a Self Service Environment, Users has PowerBI Pro License:

I want to open the platform for self service, users has Powerbi desktop installed.

My Thoughts are:

1. On DW Server, create seperate DW DB that does not affect data processing that is refreshed in the mornings

Dont want txt files that lays on the network cuz locking that down from non super users

Thoughts & ideas please?

I would pick option 2. I would prefer starting with the most secure and retricted way. Yes you need to keep ownership of a dataset and modify stuff they ask, but you can know for sure every number will work and be the same for all of  the users. If that's not enough in some months, then you can send the permission to the other more flexible option with access to data warehouse to some users.

    I hope that helps,

  • Hi. Nice topic. My thoughts are two. I think there are two scenarios in Self Service. It usually depends on the seniority of the final users.

1- Users get data: this way is like you say. Building a copy analytics DW. Give access to the users in order to let them modify data before creating the dashboards. It is a good idea to have your warehouse already modeled with facts and dimensions to make easier for them.

2- Users make reports only: this options is for business users that only want to make visualizations. You can build the data model in a Power Bi desktop that will be the Dataset. Users can create a Power Bi desktop new report connected to the Power Bi Dataset. This won't let them transform data. It's just about visualization. This way must have semantic transformation before sharing. You have to rename your tables and column to make them easy to understand. It's very important to hide column that should be used like foreign keys in facts.

I hope that helps you 🙂

Hi, Thank You for assisting and apologies for the late reply

      1. I already have some BI users in the dept but i dont want them to alter/modiy data in tables but i think you speaking of the modeling with powerbi deskop

      2. How would i do this to share a PowerBI Data Set for powerbi desktop to use

Would users be able to create calculations within powerbi desktop with option2

what route you think i should take, im thinking option1 combined with option2 beause i have a bi person in anther dept that has access to DW

what would be a great way forward, i would like to leave my footprint. im a in 2 minds as i dont really want users to create their own calculations but that wouldnt be self service and would lead to multiple interpratations of measures

i could lock down with dataset by setting up the calculations etc or also do it in the static db but i cant lock down security per dept

      what option would you do?

      thank you

Can i do option2 with dataset being shared

        > security lockdown?

        > setup predifined default calculations and users can add addtional custom calculations

        > when dataset is published, where does it reside on powerbi web or data from DW table or is it accing a view
