Separating reports from dataset, while retaining user bookmarks in service

Hi All,

Here is my situation.  I have a production app with reports and datasets combined in the same pbix file.  With the ability to cross-workspace publish, I would like to separate the reports from the dataset and move the datasets to a different workspace where others can build from.  In the ideal world, I would be able to split these apart without creating new reports and clobbering all the user's bookmarks.

Using the existing report PBIX's, is it possible to repoint them to a different (but exactly the same) Power BI dataset and retain the users bookmarks?

Hope what I am trying to do makes sense here, and even better, has a solution! 🙂

Thanks,

Dustin

Hi there

You can do this with the Power BI REST API called "Rebind datasets"

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/rest/api/power-bi/reports/rebindreportingroup

What I would suggest doing is to create a test app workspace with a PBIX.

Then rebind it to the new dataset and make sure your PBIX is still working and is then pointing to the new dataset?
