Semantic Model PBI Service Refresh 5x Longer than Desktop Refresh

Hi all,

I've done some research on my own but need a little help to figure this out. I have a dataset that takes 3 minutes to refresh in desktop but 15 minutes to refresh in PBI service.

I did some digging and found this excellent article by Phil Seamark. I ran a trace on the refresh in Desktop and in the service and the conclusion I'm coming to is that not enough slots are being used in the service. I don't really know where to go from here and would apreciate some guidance.

Desktop

vs Service

Notice how there are much less slots (highlighted in green) for the refresh to use in the service.

How do I speed up my refresh to match desktop?

Thanks!

  • Is there a gateway involved? If yes, what is the network topology and latency?

  • lbendlin No gateway. The data sources are dataflows, sharepoint files, and a datetime API.

Which cluster is your capacity running on?  Is your Sharepoint on the same cluster?

In the Power BI service click the question mark, then "About Power BI".  Check where your data is stored.

  • lbendlin My Power BI data is stored in Virginia East 2. I couldn't find where my sharepoint data is stored, might have to ask IT. But let's say they're also stored in the same place, then what?

  • Hi, Anonymous, I opened a ticket with Microsoft. After initially telling me that this didn't look right they came back a couple of weeks later and said "Nope, this is normal, refresh in the service takes longer and there is nothing you can do about it other than maybe upgrading your tier". So that's that. You can mark this as the solution if you'd like.
