Hi,
Is it possible to schedule a refresh of a dataset with machine switched off?
I've created some reports which require weekly refreshes (Monday morning for example), but I am not always avaialble at this time and therefore, my machine will be switched off. I understand your machine needs to be online but is there a way to do this without?
Thanks
afk
hi, @bo_afk
If your dataset doesn't need a gateway, It could Schedule refresh without machine switched on.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-onprem
If your dataset needs a gateway for refresh, what you need is keep the gateway is online. and make the data source is
connectable.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-getting-started
If the one the machine that gateway or data source is switched off, the Schedule refresh will be not possible.

Hi @v-lili6-msft , thanks for your response.
My dataset is connected to SQL Server so I assume that a gateway is required?
What is the best way to go about this if I'm unable to keep the machine with the gateway switched on?
Thanks

hi, @bo_afk
Could you please tell me if you have the problem? If not, could you please mark the helpful replies as Answered?

hi, @bo_afk
For your datasource is SQL Server, you need a Gateway for refresh.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-sql-tutorial
If you couldn't keep the machine with the gateway switched on, the best way is change your datasource to other datasource eg Azure SQL Database. otherwise, how does power bi dataset connect to data source when your machine is switched off?
another way is Configuring the scheduled refresh time is the time machine switched on.

I'm able to change the data source to Snowflake. How would I set up the schedule refresh using this instead?
Thanks
afk
hi, @bo_afk
For Snowflake also needs a gateway for refresh, so it has the same logic with SQL Server.

Does that mean my machine still needs to be switched on to refresh the data via schedule refresh?
hi, @bo_afk
The machine on which the data source and gateway is located needs to be switched on for refresh.

Lin
But a data source like Azure SQL database does not require a gateway? And therefore does not require a machine to be switched on?
I would have thought that all cloud storage services would not require a gateway but looks like Snowflake does.
hi, @bo_afk
Please check if the data source needs a gateway for refresh in this document:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-onprem
Snowflake needs a gateway for refresh.
