Schedule refresh with pro licence
Dear All,
I was just getting started with Power bi, wondering if someone can answer my quries.
After pubilising and creating the report with sharepoint, I sheduled a report. I would like to know how the shedule works.
1) Before the update takes place do i have to refresh the data using power BI desktop?.
2) Will lookup fields affect the speed of the refresh.
3) If multiple fiels or tables from multiple sources (such as excel, SQL) will it affect the performance or shedulled refresh time.
4)what are the ways in general you can speed up the report or refreshing time.
Hi Anonymous
1. the reports in the service have no connection to your desktop file, but you would refresh your data before publishing into the service to make sure everything is fine, not I must but good practice.
2 and 3. if you are referring to relationships between different tables then yes, it will have some impact especially if the data comes from different data sources stored in different geographic locations or servers.
4. adhere to best practice, you can find a lot of resources online and its a lot to go through, but good start would be:

Hi Mariusz, Thank you for your help.
By service you mean power bi cloud? where you see your dashboard, report etc? (https://app.powerbi.com/).
if i understood you correctly the refresh in the power bi desktop will not have an impact to the service report unless you publish it?
Is there any way we can avoid installation of gateway as our company has some restrictions and use sharepoint document library/one drive to add excel etc and may be add as a data source from there?.
do you need a gateway for sharepoint online?

Hi Anonymous
Yes, that was what I meant.
Yes, by publishing you load ( copy the file ) into the service ( cloud ) and that's where you can do the manual or scheduled refresh or make some adjustments to this report, this report is not connected to the desktop version as its an independent entity.
When using Sharepoint online / one drive you can avoid installing the gateway and use windows sign-on, the gateway is not necessary for Microsoft cloud solutions like SharePoint/OneDrive/Azure
