SSO to Power BI Service with Two Snowflake Accounts

Hi,

I have prepared a Power BI Desktop reports by connecting with two of our Snowflake accounts (two separate Snowflake URLs). I have published the report to our workspace and am trying to set up the SSO in Service and also deploy the gateway. I can see that in order to set up the connection, I'll have to designate one Snowflake account url.

My question is: Would there be any issues for the service to properly refresh the data since I have two Snowflake accounts connected?

Thanks!

  • Hi ELIU,

    Thank you for your question.

It is possible to connect a Power BI report to two different Snowflake accounts, each with its own URL. When the report is published to the Power BI Service, each Snowflake connection will be listed as a separate data source in your dataset settings.

If you are using Single Sign-On (SSO) with Azure Active Directory, each Snowflake URL needs to be configured individually. Power BI recognizes each account as a unique OAuth connection, so you will need to authenticate both separately. This can be managed in the dataset settings by selecting "OAuth2" and "Use my Azure AD credentials" for each data source.

Ensure that both Snowflake accounts are federated with Azure AD; otherwise, SSO will not function as intended.

All data sources must authenticate successfully for the dataset refresh to work. If either Snowflake connection is not set up correctly, the refresh will fail. It is recommended to manually refresh the dataset after configuring both sources to confirm proper setup.

A data gateway is only necessary if either Snowflake environment is not accessible via the public internet. If both accounts are cloud-hosted and directly reachable, a gateway is not required.

    Thank you.

  • yes, that will be an issue.  Create separate connections on your gateway, one for each of the scopes/accounts.  Map your data sources to their appropriate gateway connection.

Otherwise you risk oversharing, or may suffer from limited visibility.

Yes, you can connect to two different Snowflake accounts in Power BI, but each URL is treated as a separate source. That means you’ll need to set up credentials and SSO individually for both. If you're using an on-prem gateway, create separate connections for each account. Also, keep in mind that if one connection isn’t configured properly, the whole dataset refresh may fail.
