Report Page Size / Canvas Dimensions Not Updating After Uploading a New Version

Hello everyone,

I am facing a strange issue where modifications to a report's page dimensions are not being reflected after a new version is uploaded.

Here is the exact process I am following to reproduce the issue:

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. I start with an existing report that is already published to our premium workspace. Let's say its original page size is not in the standard 16:9 format.
  2. I open the corresponding .pbix file in Power BI Desktop .
  3. I navigate to the Format Pane > Canvas Settings and change the page Type to go back to standard "16:9" format.
  4. Resizing all visuals on every page.
  5. then i save the updated .pbix file.
  6. On the Power BI Service portal, I use the Upload function to publish the new version, overwriting the existing report.

After that,

The report on the server continues to display with the original not 16:9 page dimensions. It seems that the server is caching or ignoring the change to the canvas settings. Even clearing the browser cache has no effect.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a known reason or a more effective workaround for this issue?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Hi @v-sgandrathi,

I’m still trying to understand if it’s acceptable not to receive any warning when the flag we discussed is enabled, and users like me attempt to republish the report from the Power BI portal.

I find this a bit misleading because I wasn’t immediately aware that the report hadn’t updated.

Thanks,

Hi @Maverik91,

Thank you for sharing your concern.

Currently, when the tenant setting to prevent overwrites is enabled, the Power BI Service does not display a warning if you attempt to republish from the portal.

This is the intended functionality; but, it may be confusing as users might believe the report has been updated.

To ensure the overwrite rules are followed and the layout is properly updated, it is advisable to publish directly from Power BI Desktop when this setting is active.

If you believe that a notification or warning would enhance the user experience, you may consider submitting this suggestion to the Power BI Ideas forum for the product team’s review.

Uploading a new PBIX doesn’t always update canvas dimensions—Power BI Service may cache layout metadata. To fix it, publish directly from Power BI Desktop instead of using the Upload button. That forces a proper refresh. If needed, test in a new workspace or delete and re-publish.

Thanks for the reply @Shahid12523,

but if you look closely at what I wrote, I had a valid reason for not being able to delete and republish the report. We identified the issue. What I’m trying to understand is whether this is some kind of bug or not?

Hello @Maverik91

Did you try publishing this report to a different workspace and see if changes are reflected immediately? this would confirm if the issue is tied to overwrite behavior. If it's an 'overwrite' issue, delete the existing report in your current workspace and publish the report again:)

Hi @MasonMA ,

yes, exactly. If I try in another workspace where this report is not present, I can immediately see the changes.

Unfortunately, I can't delete and reload the reports because they are embedded in a web app, and by doing so, I would end up having to update all the links.

Thank you.

Instead of your 'On the Power BI Service portal, I use the Upload function to publish the new version, overwriting the existing report.' Could you Publish from Power BI desktop, not Upload in Service? This usually preserves the report ID, and forces canvas/layout updates correctly.

Ok, even though it's obvious, I hadn't thought about it. I believe the issue is releated to this setting enabled on the tenant. I still would have expected some errors even when republishing from the service.

Well then it would be either to have the dataset owner publish/overwrite or request tenant admin to allow you to republish:)

I asked the admin to remove this setting, and after republishing it from the web portal, it works correctly.
Now I wonder if the lack of any warning when republishing from the portal is correct behavior.

Thanks for the help,

Marco
