Refreshing vs. re-Publishing

I'm a complete newbie and am having trouble with refreshing data (it doesn't work at all).  I can get the results I want through re-publishing.  Is there any real difference between the two functions?

    Well, refreshing can be automated through the scheduling. Republishing is manual. What is your data source? Is it local? Do you have a gateway installed?

      I've tested with an Access database and with an Excel file.  Both are local and I'm using a personal gateway.  I've tried both manual and scheduled refreshing, but they both fail.

        Hi Anonymous,

        You use gateway personal mode, the gateway will always run using the account and password you are currently logged in with. If you aren’t logged in to Windows, the gateway will not be running and refresh will. So if you use the current username and password to access the Access database?
