Refreshing pbix with an append step in power query failing

We have an odd situation when 3 of our pbix files fail when they refresh. I seem to have tracked it down to an "Append Queries" step between 2 queries in Power Query Editor. We use on premises data loads into the pbix files these aren't direct query.

The pbix refresh works absolutely fine in desktop but fails everytime when published with below error

OnPremise error: Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again. The database operation was cancelled because of an earlier failure.

We have many other pbix files with Append Queries that are refreshing when published with no problems it's just a couple that fail. I even recreated the pbix in a separate new pbix file and it also fails when this step is added. I am using the latest gateway update 3000.54.8 and the latest desktop version 2.84.981.0.

I have an open ticket and there are some investigations going on I just wondered if anyone else has had this issue?

Microsoft appears to have fixed the problem yesterday. I am able to refresh those reports that were failing.

I did confirm on my end that removing the append did resolve the issue. That's an option on 1 of my 2 reports that are failing, but not the other. Would love to hear what they let you know is the issue. Thanks!

Hi @gooranga1 ,

Which data sources you are using in the report? It seems the dataset include on-premises data sources, did you configure the gateway for this on-premises data sources? In addition, please configure the privacy level for all data sources to Organizational in Data Source Settings page both for Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service. You can refer the following documenataion about the configuration of privacy level.

Privacy Levels for Cloud Data Sources

Best Regards

Rena

I am experiencing the same issue. I've got about 40 reports, and 2 of the reports are failing. the others are using the same data source and same gateway, so not sure what makes these 2 different from the others. Any updates on this one?

Hi @drc00203

It looks like the issues occurs for a specific circumstance for. We use SSAS and SQL on-premises and we import data. In the refresh failing reports we have some append/merge steps that are append/merge between 2 SSAS queries. Any Append/Merge steps between our SQL and SSAS databases work fine but we don't have windows auth into SQL. MS are still looking into it but I have re-worked our reports so they don't need to do these append/merges between SSAS queries anymore.

Thanks for the response. There are certain parts of my report i have to use the append, but perhaps i can remove it from the others and that will fix my problem. Appreciate it!

Thanks @Greg_Deckler  yep I have raised one. I just wondered if it was just me!

I'm facing the same problem. The refresh for just one of our reports fails, when published (scheduled and manuel refresh). Refreshing the pbix in PowerBI-Desktop works.

Scheduled refresh was working until last Saturday and the first scheduled refresh on Sunday morning failed - until now.

I already raised a ticket and currently I'm waiting for the call.

Updating the gateway to the latest version didn't fix it.

I'll let you know, if there is any progress on this.
