Refresh times out every time

Hi, I have issues refreshing a dataset in PowerBI. Either with scheduled refreshes, or manually triggered refresh, it always times out. The same dataset can refresh from PBI Desktop. This is an iss...

JSeb How long is it taking in the Desktop? Have you checked the Gateway log files to determine what the specific issue is?

Hi Anonymous

Actually I mispoke, it seems Desktop PBI can't refresh this dataset anymore neither. Both used to work but were taking a long time (about 15 to 20 minutes) but now time out.

I don't have any gateway, it is a direct SQL connection to SQL Azure.

I found that if I change the scale of my SQL database to P4 (about $2000/month), the refresh works again. However this used to work just with my current instance and I'd prefer to increase the timeout time.

    JSeb You could take a look at this thread in which it explains how to set the timeout in the M code, I don't know if that will work for a DQ connection though. The other aspect i am uncertain on is whether or not that will actually work in the Service.

    My advice would be to look at performance tuning the queries in the database...
