Refresh sharepoint data from sharepoint excel file on Power BI.com
I can refresh the data in the desktop app, but not once I post the dataset on Power BI, I get a credentials error. I believe I need a gateway, but not 100% sure.

Can you share what error message you are reciving and confirm if you are using SharePoint online not SharePoint 2013

Please update the credentails under dataset credentails section
Use authentication type = OAuth2 and Privacy = Organizational
