I am getting this error with a dataflow refresh.     Data source credentials are missing or invalid. Please update the credentials for SQL in dataflows settings page and try again.   it is interm...

I guess your on-prem SQL is running 24/7 and is always accessable? No periodic maintenance or traffic restrictions in the main working time (just an idea)? I know about such traffic restrictions. We do it also in some cases.

Maybe you have too much parallel traffic where CPU of your gateway can´t handle it at the moment.

Your updates are succesful in earlier hours and after closing time.
