Received error payload from gateway service with ID 104808:

"An exception encountered while accessing the target data source."

Has anyone recieved this error in the connections? and resolved this?

  • SQL connection only. no other data sources.
  • Connection works fine in power BI desktop
  • Connection uses a gateway which is installed on the server(SQLXYZ3). Not a gateway issue because other connections(SQLXYZ2 or SQLXYZ4) using the same gateway work fine.
  • The server is running 24*7(both sql server and gateway server)
  • Scheduled refreshes work fine on specific timings and specific days. and refresh fails on some occasions.

Based on your description, this connect works most of the time but occasionally has a refresh issue?  Is the timing of the issue difficult to predict, or does it seem to occur most frequently at certain times?

Does the source database have large transformations that it needs to perform sometimes? Could your refresh be failing simply due to the databasing doing something?  (i.e. you have an SSIS package running or a user is processing data at certain times)?

Its not uncommon to have random intermittent failures as well.  If its always the same source, but not others then its more likely something closer related to that source.

Hi @RossEdwards ,Thanks for your sharing!

Hi @shravanreddy133 ,

I have something to add.

Since the issue occurs intermittently, reviewing the gateway logs might provide more insight into what's happening when the refresh fails.Troubleshoot the on-premises data gateway | Microsoft Learn

You can also provide more information on reporting errors.
