Receive a email notification "Your scheduled refresh has been paused."

The report is using schedule refresh until today.

The schedule refresh is not my computer but i haven’t watched the report in my computer for more than 2 months.

Is this the reason?

Does this happen even if someone has been watching on other computers?

@michaellui,

This is irrespective of the machine from which it is viewed. Scheduled refrehsh is a power BI service feature which is based on cloud.

So if this 2 month inactivation caused the pause email is received, it means that no one from any machine has ever accessed any of the dashboards or reports built on that dataset for which the scheduled refresh was set.

Still to answer your question, NO: This wouldn't happen if anyone has been visiting/accessing from other computers.

Because someone else has accessed the report, according to your answer, I shouldn’t have received this email, so is this a bug?

Hi @michaellui ,

The reports from one workspace can be accessed through any pro user's personal workspace too or even through embed links. If the reports are accessed through any of the above scenarios, it is not counted as an activity of dataset from actual workspace.

If the user has accessed it through the workspace where scheduled refresh is set, then this error should not appear. If it still appears. then this is probably a bug and you can create a support ticket from this link considering you are a PRO user.

HI @michaellui,

How did these users access? Any operations they apply to your contents? Did these operations log in usage metrics or power bi audit logs? If this is a case, it might be related to trace features that power bi apply to your contents.

other users watch the contents in power bi data visualization but they are also creators and may occasionally open powerbi desktop to update

@michaellui,

I'm not very clear on what is implied by watching contents in "power bi data visualization"? Is it services?

Regarding desktop: Opening or closing the pbix in desktop will doen't count in the services datasets being hit.

So even if pbix of reports was opened in desktop but the reports in workspace weren't visted for 2 months, that will still cause the refresh to pause.

Hi @michaellui ,

Yes, the reason of dataset being inactive(no dashboard or report created on top of that dataset has been executed/visited) for 2 months and hence scheduled refresh being paused is correct.

As per Microsoft Power BI Documentation:

"After two months of inactivity, scheduled refresh on your dataset is paused. A dataset is considered inactive when no user has visited any dashboard or report built on the dataset. At that time, the dataset owner is sent an email indicating the scheduled refresh is paused. The refresh schedule for the dataset is then displayed as disabled. To resume scheduled refresh, simply revisit any dashboard or report built on the dataset."
