Published dataset download
Hi,
so far I was always able to download from PBI service datasets of published reports.
When I sent the command to download the dataset, the Service always direclty started the download of a pbix file with the dataset and connected report.
Today instead I received this notification: "The report XXX was exported to a .pbix file and is available for you to download".
No download started and I'm not finding the place to donwload the pbix file from.
I am Admin of the workspace.
Did something changed in the service recently?
Is this the new intended behavior for dataset download?
When I can find the location from which I can download the pbix files?
Hi fpennisi
Thank you for sharing your observation. It appears that the Power BI Service currently supports both direct PBIX downloads and the newer asynchronous export process, depending on factors such as report size, workspace configuration, and service region. If the file downloads immediately, that behavior remains valid and supported; if processed asynchronously, the exported PBIX will be available in the Notifications panel (bell icon) once completed. Since you’ve noticed fluctuations across workspaces, this due to Microsoft’s gradual rollout of the new export experience. If the behavior persists or causes workflow disruptions, feel free to reach out for further assistance. We will be happy to assist you.

Depending on the size of the file you may get a 202 response and a request ID ("exportID"). You are then supposed to poll for the request status, and when done, use the download API call, presenting said request ID.

Hi fpennisi
Yes, this change in behavior is intentional and aligns with recent updates Microsoft has made to the Power BI Service regarding how PBIX downloads are handled for published reports. Previously, when you selected the option to “Download this file” or “Download the report,” the PBIX file would begin downloading immediately after the Service processed the export request. However, with the newer update, Power BI now performs the PBIX export asynchronously in the background for large or complex datasets. Once the export is complete, the Service displays a notification such as “The report XXX was exported to a .pbix file and is available for you to download” rather than starting the download automatically.
To retrieve the exported PBIX, you need to go to the Notifications panel (the bell icon in the top-right corner of the Power BI Service interface). There, you will find the completed export listed with a “Download” button next to it. Clicking this will initiate the actual PBIX download. This new approach improves reliability and prevents timeouts for larger exports by handling them asynchronously. As a workspace admin, you still have full permissions to export, but note that this feature might be disabled for some reports connected to shared or live datasets, in which case the PBIX export option may appear greyed out or unavailable.

Hi, sorry for the late answer.
I understood the explanation that was given, but indeed when I tried to test it again the behavior of the service changed to the original one: now when I try to download the same dataset, I got the direct download of the entire pbix report.
I've experienced the same behavior on different reports in different workspaces of our tenant.
