Publish to Web refresh vs. dataset refresh

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can explain to me how various refresh functions work. I want to be able to see changes reflected in my Power BI reports that have been Published to Web from an online data source.

I have a report that connects to an online Sharepoint folder as the datasouce. I have been seeing that the updates to the files have not be showing in the reports.  These are the two parts that I am confused about:

  1. I added the refresh parameter to the report URL for Publish to Web, as we described in a different post. But does that pull all the way through to the original data source or does it only refresh from cached data?
  2. What role does the data refresh settings in the Power BI Dataset play? Currently, the dataset is set to refresh 2x per day. However, since it uses a direct connection to the Sharepoint files, does that matter?

Can anyone explain this? Thanks!  Jason

Hi @SHDJason ,

Updates to a report or visual take approximately one hour to be reflected in Publish to web embed codes. Reference: Updates to reports, and data refresh.

2. What role does the data refresh settings in the Power BI Dataset play? Currently, the dataset is set to refresh 2x per day. However, since it uses a direct connection to the Sharepoint files, does that matter?

For any data source being hosted online, any changes made are automatically updated in Power BI, usually within an hour. Refresh a dataset created from a .CSV file on OneDrive or SharePoint Online

Hi,

Are there plans to change this? My DirectQuery data refreshes every 15 minutes in Power BI Service. I need to 'Publish to Web' but having an hour refresh makes the data obsolete to our users. It needs to be 15 minutes.

Thanks,

Dan
