PowerBI Premium Capacity - DataFlow

Hi all

We have a PowerBi Premium services and we are evaluation the pros and cons of working with dataflow's versus not usin data flow's.

Right now we do the foundation with SQL.  We do use Dataflow base on scenario and situation. But we would like to have insight what would be the pros and cons of using Dataflow. Either with small dataset to complex dataset. Is there any security concern, etc..

Looking foward to hear from the community

Sincerely

Hi, @KevinMorneault

I submitted a solution in the post, and I’m wondering if it was helpful to you. Could you please provide some feedback on my solution?

hi, @KevinMorneault

I'm happy to answer your questions. Dataflow is an important component of Power BI.

Here are some advantages of Dataflow:

1.Centralize data transformation. Dataflows allow you to perform data transformation tasks independently of your Power BI dataset. You can create and manage data transformations in a centralized manner, making it easier to maintain and update. Changes made in a dataflow automatically propagate to all reports linked to it, reducing redundancy and effort.

2.Reusability and Consistency. When multiple reports rely on the same data transformations, using dataflows ensures consistency. You define transformations once and reuse them across various reports, avoiding duplication of work. This is especially beneficial when dealing with numerous reports or dashboards.

3.Cloud-Based and Scalable. Dataflows run in the cloud, leveraging the Power Query engine. They can handle large datasets and complex transformations without impacting your local machine's performance. Scalability is inherent, allowing you to process data efficiently even as your dataset grows.

4.Integration with Other Services. Dataflows are not limited to Power BI; you can also create them in Power Apps (Power Platform Dataflows). This flexibility allows you to share data transformations across different Microsoft services.

Here are some disadvantages of dataflow:

1.Cloud-Only Creation. Dataflows can only be created in the Power BI service (cloud) and not in Power BI Desktop. You'll need to work within a workspace in the Power BI service to create dataflows.

2.Storage Considerations. Dataflows do not store data within the Power BI dataset itself. Instead, they use external storage options such as Azure Data Lake Storage or Dataverse. While no extra license is needed for storage, understanding where your data resides is crucial.

3.Limitations and Restrictions. Dataflows have certain limitations related to authoring, refreshes, and capacity management. For example, U.S. Government DoD customers might not have access to dataflows. It's essential to be aware of these limitations when planning your solution.

4.Learning Curve. If your team is accustomed to SQL-based transformations, transitioning to dataflows may require some learning. Familiarizing yourself with Power Query and the cloud-based approach is necessary.
