PowerBI Desktop Get dataflow gen1 data from another tenant
It just broke down within this week.
I could pull dataflow gen1 data from Tenant A using my guest account (User X) from Tenant B but now it shows me my own dataflows (from Tenant B) even though i log in through Tenant A with User X in Data Source setting pane.
What did change? Does somebody know? And is there a solution for that?
I admin like about 10 tenants at the moment. I checked two and they both failed. I saw that Power BI Desktop had an update yesterday, may be its about Power BI Desktop version.
What resolved my issue is to disable "Use updated sign-in experience for data sources" setting in Security below options.

You can try the following and let me know if this works:- In Power BI Desktop go to File > Options and settings > Data source settings.
- Switch to Global permissions.
- Find Power BI dataflows, click it, then Clear permissions and confirm.
- Close Desktop, open it again, and this time sign in with the account/tenant where the Gen1 dataflow actually lives.
- Try Get data > Power BI dataflows again.
After clearing the cached connection desktop finally prompts to log in and then showed the correct tenant’s dataflows.
If your org has locked down cross‑tenant access the proper fix is usually to either:
- Get a real user account in the other tenant and use that in Desktop, or
- Ask the admin to allow cross‑tenant access for Power BI.

Recently, Power BI Desktop’s behavior changed with accessing Gen1 dataflows across tenants using guest accounts. Previously, when you logged in to Tenant A as a guest user from Tenant B, you could directly pull dataflow data from Tenant A. Now, even if you log in with your Tenant A guest account, Power BI Desktop is showing only the dataflows from your home tenant (Tenant B).
This change is likely due to updated authentication handling in Power BI Desktop or changes in how Azure AD handles guest user tokens, causing it to default to your home tenant data instead of the guest tenant’s data.
Unfortunately, there’s no simple fix inside Power BI Desktop right now. A few things to try:
- Sign out completely and clear all cached credentials in Power BI Desktop before logging in again.
- Use a private/incognito browser session to authenticate and then connect.
- Check if your guest user permissions in Tenant A are still valid and haven’t been restricted.
- If possible, switch to Gen2 dataflows, which have better cross-tenant support.
Microsoft may need to address this behavior in future Power BI Desktop updates. For now, coordinating with your tenant admins to verify guest user setup and permissions is the best approach.
