Power Query in Power BI Online

Hi All,

Is there any way to use Power Query in Power BI online? I have a trial access to Microsoft Fiber.

I'm trying to update my Power BI online dashboard as the connection to the excell spreadsheet (the source data) is broken due to some changes. I successfully rectified the issue in Power BI app by usnig Power Query, but can't do the same online.

Thank you.

  • Hi S0PHIE,
Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft fabric community forum.

You can use Datamart in Microsoft Fabric to manage your Excel data connection and transformations directly in Power BI Online without relying on Power BI Desktop.

DataMart enables you to utilize Power Query Online for data cleaning and transformation in the cloud. It stores data in an automatically generated SQL database, facilitating easy querying. You can schedule automatic refreshes to keep reports current and directly connect Power BI reports to DataMart for seamless integration. For further details, please refer to the official Microsoft documentation at the link below:

If this helps, then please Accept it as a solution and dropping a "Kudos" so other members can find it more easily.
    Thank you.

  • Hi , I hope you are doing good!

Directly using power query for your existing report in power bi service just like power bi desktop is not supported, but in Microsoft Fabric they have introduced Dataflow Gen 2 which works and have similar interface as Power Query editor.
You can checout Microsoft documentation for the same: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/fabric/data-factory/create-first-dataflow-gen2

  • Hi S0PHIE ,

Using Power Query in Power BI Online

Power BI online (service) doesn’t directly offer a Power Query editor like the Power BI Desktop application. However, you can leverage Power BI Dataflows to replicate and manage your queries online.

Open your Power BI Desktop file, go to Transform Data > Power Query Editor, select the table, and copy the M-query from Advanced Editor.

In Power BI online, go to your workspace, select New > Dataflow > Add New Tables > Blank Query, paste the M-query, and save the Dataflow.

Replace the old connection in Power BI Desktop with the Dataflow by connecting to Power BI Dataflows as the new data source.

Publish the updated report to Power BI online, ensuring it connects to the Dataflow for data updates.

I hope it will be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Sai Teja
