Hello All,
I have built a report via power bi desktop that was based on an excel file hosted on sharepoint. I have now published the power bi report to the online services and would like the power bi report to reflect the changes made onto the excel document it is built off. I know that I need to create a data gateway in order for this to work, but have been running into an error when trying to add a data source to my gateway:
Unable to connect: We encountered an error while trying to connect to . Details: "We could not register this data source for any gateway instances within this cluster. Please find more details below about specific errors for each gateway instance.
I am trying to get my gateway data source via file path from the excel report that is sitting in the onedrive folder of my machine. Is this an issue maybe with my windows credentials? Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Denis,
Thank you for your response.
The file is located on the sharepoint on premise (the cloud where the entire company can post docs to). And the gateway is through power bi services which is accessible via the same sharepoint that hosts the excel file.
Does this answer your question?
Hi, @Anonymous
If your data source is online, you don’t need to add it to the gateway, you only need to configure credentials under the dataset.
If it doesn’t solve your problem, please feel free to ask me.

hi jane,
i am not sure what you mean by configuring credentials, where do you go to add/configure credentials under the dataset tab?
thank you

Hi, @Anonymous
You can go to workspace >>dateset>>more option>>setting>>data source credentials, then edit.

Hey @Anonymous ,
that's a little difficult to say.
Is it sharepoint online or sharepoint on premises?
In general the data source has to be available from the server, where the gateway is running. So if you write in the Power BI file C:\Temp\myExcel.xlsx the file has to be reachable from the Gateway server on the same path C:\Temp\myExcel.xlsx
Can you check that?
