Power Bi Service running incredibly slow

- Check that your data sources are responsive. Consider reducing the frequency of data refreshes. Avoid overusing Direct Query, as it can slow down performance.
- Limit the amount of data you're importing by filtering or summarizing. Optimize your DAX queries and avoid overly complex calculations. Remove any unused columns and tables to reduce unnecessary data. Clear your browser cache or try using a different browser if needed.
- If needed, upgrading to Power BI Premium will provide dedicated capacity for better performance. Use the Power BI Admin portal to monitor resource utilization.
- Use query Diagnostics and the Performance Analyzer to identify slow queries. Implement aggregations for large datasets to speed up reports. Limit the number of visuals per report and avoid using high-cardinality fields or complex chart types. Use bookmarks to show only a subset of data at a time, which can improve report load times.

Some users have reported slower Power BI performance since December 2024. Possible causes include:
- Service Performance Issues: Microsoft may be facing service disruptions.
- New Updates/Features: Recent changes could impact performance.
- Large Data Models: Bigger or more complex data models can slow down performance.
- Data Source Issues: Problems with slow or large external data sources.
- Gateway Problems: Performance issues with the on-premises data gateway.
To address this, try clearing the cache, optimizing queries, checking refresh schedules, or testing connectivity to data sources. If the issue persists, check Microsoft's Power BI service status or contact support.

I've encountered the same challenge—summarizing data becomes extremely difficult when users need to drill through to transaction-level detail. In practice, it's not always feasible to aggregate data meaningfully without losing the granularity required for decision-making. And regardless of company size, data models can quickly become complex, especially when we need to calculate nuanced scenarios or layer in business logic that doesn’t fit neatly into standard measures.
What surprised me most was learning that even filtering data in the Power BI Desktop app can dramatically impact service capacity. I was pulling time-sensitive data for our company—just applying filters, not transforming or refreshing—and the entire environment slowed to a crawl. When IT investigated, I turned out to be the top resource consumer in the tenant. It’s hard to believe that a single user performing basic filtering could spike capacity usage so drastically, but this is the second organization where I’ve seen the same issue.
This highlights a broader need: we need better ways to accommodate complex modeling and transactional drill-through without compromising performance or overloading shared capacity.
