Power Bi Licensing

Hello Everyone,

We created a Power Bi dashboard and we have 30 users who will be viewing the dashboard. through Microsoft Licensing Documentation Compare Microsoft 365 Enterprise plans.

we understood that with Microsoft E5 plan, power Bi pro is included and with Microsoft E3 plan, power Bi pro is partially included. so since our users will only need to view the dashboard, we figured MS E3 plan will be fine for us.

After Licensing all the users with E3, we found that power bi pro is not included. we are required to upgrade to Power Bi pro.

1. is there a way we can solve this issue without adding more costs to what we have now?

2. If we are going to be required to upgrade our license, can one Premium power Bi license be used to share the dashboard to everything and all the users be able to view the dashboard without being asked to upgrade to any License?

3. Can we roll back the licenses we bought and get power Bi pro License instead?

your help on this will be much appreciated.

  • Hello Martin,

I don't think that you can solve the problem without additional costs.

Power BI Premium is a license model in which viewer are free. But Power BI Premium is too big / too expensive for your case.

I think there is no other way than purschasing Power BI Pro licenses for all users. But it is clear to you that they can be purchased separately? At least in the market I know (Germany), the price difference from E3 to E5 is bigger than a Power BI Pro license. So Power BI Pro alone is not a reason for upgrading to E5.
So you also wouldn't have to roll back the E3 licenses.

    Regards
    Michael

      Hello Michael,

im sorry for the confusion, by premium License i meant per user plan which goes for $20.

will i get a refund if i go back to E1 or E2 and then buy power bi license after?

  • Hello Martin,

ok, and I didn't see the word "premium" in your question.

To clarify this, Power BI Premium per user does not allow "Consume content without a per-user license". So one Premium Per user license wouldn't solve the problem.

Only Power BI Premium per capacity allows this.

Sorry, regarding refund I can't say anything.
