Hello Community,
My Power BI Desktop shows all the visuals correctly.
However, after publishing the report to the Power BI Service, although the On-Premises Gateway and connections are configured correctly and the report refreshes successfully, some visuals are not displayed.
Below is the detailed error:
Couldn't retrieve the data for this visual. Please try again later.

Hi @peternguyen2 ,
Thank you for your patience
The extra information you provided is very helpful and may indicate the root cause of the issue.
Since your report uses Direct Query to another Power BI semantic model (a chained or composite model setup), the problem may not be with the gateway itself. In Power BI Service, some visuals can fail in cases such as:
Since only some visuals fail but refresh works, this suggests the semantic model query execution path might be failing for specific visuals, rather than a general connectivity problem.
Here are a few things to try:
Replace the failing visual with a simple table using the same fields or measures.
Check if the semantic model is hosted in a different workspace or capacity.
Make sure all users and the gateway connection have Build permission on the source semantic model.
If possible, import a small subset of data instead of using Direct Query to see if the issue is related to chained semantic model queries.

Just wanted to check if you had the opportunity to review the information provided. Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

From your observation it appears that you are having an issue connecting to the underlying data source. I would recommend logging onto the on premises gateway and making sure that you can successfully connect to the data source first. Once that is done you can then try and recreate a connection to see if that will then work. Once that works you should then be able to map it back to your power BI semantic model.
Hi,
There are no issues with the gateway or the connections.
The workspace type is Power BI Pro
Power BI Desktop reads the data source via DirectQuery from the Power BI semantic model dataset as screenshot attached
Could this be the root of the issue?
Thanks

Hello @peternguyen2
The report works in Power BI Desktop but some visuals fail in Power BI Service due to an OnPremiseServiceException.
common causes
Gateway timeout or outdated gateway
Heavy/complex DAX queries
Permission or RLS issues
Custom/unsupported visuals
Data type or null handling problems
Quick troubleshooting
Replace failing visual with a simple table visual
Test measures individually
Check gateway logs and update gateway
Simplify heavy DAX calculations
Verify permissions/RLS in Service
Since dataset refresh is successful and only some visuals fail, the issue is most likely related to query complexity or gateway execution in the Power BI Service.
Hi Pankaj,
You may be correct that, “Since the dataset refresh is successful and only some visuals fail, the issue is most likely related to query complexity or gateway execution in the Power BI Service.”
I just wanted to add some more information:
Previously, the developer (who has since resigned) published the report using a Personal Gateway installed on his laptop, and the report worked well.
However, I have now published the report using an On-Premises Gateway, and the issue is occurring.
I also tested using a cloud connection, as the data source is from Kainexus (connected via API key), and the same issue still occurs.
Would this additional information help?
Thanks
