hi @johnpjustus

Power BI does provide some governance and auditing capabilities within the Power BI service, but not all the specific details you mentioned are available out-of-the-box. Here's what you can do with regards to governance reporting in Power BI:

  1. Power BI Auditing:

    • Power BI provides audit logs that capture activities such as user sign-ins, dataset access, and report views. You can access these logs in the Power BI Admin Portal.
    • To view and analyze these logs, you can export them to Azure Log Analytics or use third-party tools for log analysis.
  2. Workspace and Dataset Management:

    • In the Power BI service, you can manage workspaces, including workspace permissions and content within each workspace.
    • You can also monitor dataset refreshes, which includes checking the last refresh date and status of each dataset.
  3. Usage Metrics:

    • Power BI service offers usage metrics at the report level. You can access these metrics by selecting a report and navigating to the "Usage Metrics" tab. This can provide insights into report usage.
  4. Admin Portal:

    • The Power BI Admin Portal provides a centralized location for managing various aspects of your Power BI tenant. You can use it to view workspace information, assign roles, manage capacities, and more.
  5. Custom Auditing and Monitoring:

    • If you require more granular or specific governance reports, you might need to implement custom auditing and monitoring solutions. You can use Power BI's APIs and PowerShell cmdlets to extract metadata and usage data for further analysis.
  6. Third-Party Solutions:

    • There are third-party solutions and tools available that extend the auditing and governance capabilities of Power BI. These tools can help you generate custom reports and gain deeper insights into your Power BI deployment.
  7. Activity Log Dataflow (Power Query):

    • You can create a dataflow that retrieves activity log data from the Power BI REST API. This allows you to capture information about the activities happening in your Power BI environment, including workspace creation, report publishing, and more. Once captured, you can use this data in Power BI reports for customized governance reporting.
  8. Power BI Premium Features:

    • Some of the advanced governance and monitoring features, such as capacity metrics, might be available primarily for Power BI Premium or Power BI Premium Per User (PPU) users.
