Power BI import dataset refresh fails (with no error message)

Hello All,

My Power BI import dataset is connected to an on-premises SQL Server database via an on-premises enterprise data gateway (Version: 3000.72.6) with the location of our Power BI Service data located in West Europe (Netherlands) and our Gateway is also based in West-Europe.

We have been facing a consistent issue for the past few months wherein our scheduled refresh/manual refresh on Power BI service intermittently fails and no error message is given as to the reason for the failure (snapshot appended below for reference). Moreover, when we try refreshing the import dataset file on power bi desktop then the refresh succeeds over there.

I have monitored the Power BI dataset query on our SQL Server database when there is a scheduled/manual refresh on-going and there is no query blockage happening at that end. I have also exported the gateway logs but I am unable to identify a cause for these failures from the logs.

Would appreciate some guidance on how to handle this issue from the Power BI community or if anyone else was facing a similar type of issue then have you managed to find a permenant solution to this?

Note: I have already tried re-installing the Gateway as well as restarting the Gateway services whenever such types of failures occur but the problem still persists.

    Hi Anonymous ,

Would you please try to update your gateway to latest version(last version: 3000.77.3)? And you can also follow the document to troubleshoot your issue:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-gateway-onprem-tshoot

You can collect logs from the on-premises data gateway app to find detailed error message. In the on-premises data gateway app, select Diagnostics and then select the Export logs link, as shown in the following image:

And you can also  find the event logs for the on-premises data gateway service, or use Fiddler to troubleshoot your issue.

If this post helps, then please consider Accept it as the solution to help the other members find it more quickly.

    Best Regards,

    Lucien
