Power BI homepage - expanded view

The Power BI homepage allows to set two views: Simplified and Expanded. It looks like the Simplified view is set by default but we prefer to set the Expanded view as default because we have published content in the Featured section. Can the Expanded view be set as default ?

  • Hi Cars1010

You're right, the Expanded view does offer better visibility for organizational content, especially sections like Featured. It makes sense to want this view set as the default for all users to improve consistency and user experience across your organization. While users’ individual preferences are remembered after they manually switch views, relying on everyone to do this isn't ideal, particularly in larger organizations.

At the moment, Microsoft doesn’t offer a tenant-level setting to enforce the Expanded view by default. However, your feedback is valid and shared by many others. I recommend submitting this feature on thePower BI Ideas - Microsoft Fabric Communityportal and getting as many upvotes as possible. Microsoft’s product teams often use that feedback to help shape future updates and this would be a meaningful improvement for many users.

  • According to the Power BI Service documentation, if you select the Expanded view from the View menu, it becomes your default Home layout. This means that once a user manually switches to the Expanded view, it will be remembered as their default layout for future sessions.

However, it's important to note that this setting is user-specific and session-based. Power BI does not currently offer a tenant-wide or workspace-wide setting to enforce the Expanded view as the default for all users. Each user must manually select the Expanded view for it to become their default layout.

But somehow, someone at Microsoft has taken the decision to set the Simplified view as default. Providing a possibility to push content to an organisation via the Featured section is so powerful but then Microsoft expects thousands of users to toggle from Simplified to Expanded view. Not very efficient. I think Microsoft should give admin rights to set either view or set the Expanded view (which offers more possibilities) as default. It appears to be such a trivial thing, and yet, this is where Microsoft makes things more difficult than they should be.

  • Hi Cars1010

You can’t set Expanded as the org-wide default. Power BI Home defaults to Simplified; when a user switches to Expanded (View >> Expanded), it’s remembered only for that user on future visits. There’s no tenant/admin setting to force Expanded for everyone. If you need a common landing experience, use a Power BI/App navigation page and point users there instead.
