Power BI Store Data
I have few questions that relate with power BI. Where my data is store in power BI when I share dashboard or report in to Power BI Service (cloud)? if it stores in cloud of Power BI, will it be encrypted? how can I trust it?
Another one is I want to publish power BI dashborad on premise, Which service that it suit for my company? Is it Power BI Premium Per Capacity? or it has other service that cheaper than this? Can I buy Power BI Premium Per User to deploy on Premise if I have DWH on Premise?
My company starting build warehouse on premise and want all data were store on premise enventhough power bi.
Hi. Let's see. If you want to have a deep understanding about the security behind storage and platform, you can read this doc: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/guidance/whitepaper-powerbi-security
If you want to work with reporting on premise, the Power Bi solution for that is Power Bi Report Server (integrated with SQL Server enterprise). You can check it out here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/products/power-bi/report-server
The premium license can't be purchased anymore. If you want to work with the cloud you need Fabric Capacity or PowerBi Pro licenses.
You can build an on premise data warehouse and use PowerBi at cloud with a Gateway or PowerBi Report Server
I hope that helps
Where is data stored in Power BI Service?
- When you share a report in Power BI Service (Cloud), the data is stored in Azure regions based on your tenant location.
- If your dataset uses DirectQuery or Live Connection, the data remains in the source and is not stored in Power BI.
Is the data encrypted in Power BI Service?
- Yes, data is encrypted at rest and in transit using Azure-managed encryption (AES-256). You can also use Customer Managed Keys (CMK) for additional security.
How to trust Power BI Service security?
- Power BI follows Microsoft’s security and compliance standards, including ISO 27001, GDPR, SOC, HIPAA, etc.
- You can monitor and control access using Microsoft Purview, Sensitivity Labels, and Row-Level Security (RLS).
Which Power BI service suits on-premises deployment?
- Power BI Report Server (PBIRS) is the best option for on-premises deployment.
- Power BI Premium Per Capacity (P SKU) includes PBIRS and allows on-premises publishing.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Power BI Premium Per Capacity for on-premises?
- Yes, Power BI Report Server is available with SQL Server Enterprise with Software Assurance, which may be more cost-effective.
Can Power BI Premium Per User (PPU) be used for on-premises deployment?
- No, PPU does not include Power BI Report Server. Only Premium Per Capacity (P SKU) or SQL Server Enterprise supports on-premises deployment.
Your situation: On-Prem Data Warehouse & On-Prem Power BI
- Recommended Option: Use Power BI Report Server (via SQL Server Enterprise or Premium Per Capacity).
- This ensures all data stays on-premises while allowing Power BI report publishing.

I think that the price of Premium per Capacity is high, So can I use Power BI Pro and use power BI Direct Query from On-Prem Data Warehouse?
