Power BI Service on-premises gateway
Hi, I would like to ask for advice.
My model is using mixed mode (SQL DirectQuery + SharePoint Import). The DirectQuery dataset is not under my ownership, so I’m unable to modify the Power Query or the source.
Everything works fine in Power BI Desktop, but after publishing to Power BI Service, I get an on-premise/gateway error and the visuals do not load.
May I know if this approach is correct? or is there any other architecture that suitable with my scenario?

What you’re hitting is expected. In Power BI Service, DirectQuery sources require a properly configured on-premises gateway that has access to the SQL database. Since you don’t own the dataset, you can’t update credentials or gateway settings, so the service can’t connect hence the error.
Options:Ask the dataset owner to configure a gateway and share access.
Use a fully imported dataset if possible, removing DirectQuery.
Create a separate dataset where you combine SQL and SharePoint data you control, then publish that.
Mixed-mode works in Desktop because your local machine can access the SQL source directly, but in the Service, the gateway is mandatory.

I would recommend if possible to move away from the direct query source to an import model because then you can do more with that information as well as Latin the load on your direct query source. And as recommended above, you would still need a gateway to refresh that data, so that steps would need to be done.
