Hi all,
Im trying to come up with some architecture working with a customer.
Its a very basic set up but they dont want there data on my laptop. it has to stay within their tenancy.
I need to do alot of transformation to get the OLTP into a proper star schema shape. One option is
Could they import the data into power BI service as a dataflow?
Now I know i can't do any transformations in the dataflow because Ive only got Pro and without Premium you can't do the real transformation work.
BUT. If they loaded it into dataflow in their own Power BI service area. Then Added me a log in into the workspace.
Could I then connect to the dataflow with their log in. on my own machine and transform in Power BI desktop over the top of the dataflow.
Would that mean that essentially the data remains in service which adheres to their policy of not letting it out of their tenancy?
Hi @DebbieE ,
Based on your description, with respect to the specific situation where you are working within a customer's tenant and not keeping data on a laptop, using a data stream in their Power BI service is a viable approach. By having the customer import data into the data stream in the Power BI service and providing you with workspace access, you can connect to the data stream from the Power BI desktop using the customer's login credentials. In this way, you can use Power BI Desktop's capabilities to perform transformations on the data and, because the data resides in the service, you can comply with the policy of not letting the data leave its leased scope.
