Hi @pennyhoho117,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric support community with your questions.

Microsoft is phasing out Power BI Premium per capacity (P-SKUs), and existing customers will need to transition to Microsoft Fabric Capacity (F-SKUs). As you currently hold a Power BI Pro license, you will need to acquire Fabric Capacity to access premium features such as paginated reports, large dataset storage, or AI-powered analytics.

Important update coming to Power BI Premium licensing | Microsoft Power BI Blog | Microsoft Power BI

Difference Between Power BI Premium and Fabric Capacity

  • Power BI Premium: This is a standalone offering that provides dedicated resources and advanced features specifically for Power BI, including larger datasets, paginated reports, and certain AI capabilities. It is designed for organizations requiring enterprise-grade Power BI functionality and scalability.
  • Fabric Capacity: This is a unified platform within Microsoft Fabric that includes all the advanced Power BI features previously offered by Premium. Additionally, it integrates a wider range of data workloads, such as data engineering, data science, and real-time analytics. Fabric Capacity represents the new licensing model for accessing these advanced capabilities across the entire Fabric platform.

SKUs and Capacity Units (CU) in Fabric

  • Consider SKUs as the "size" of your Fabric environment, representing various capacity levels such as F2, F4, F8 and F64. Each SKU offers a different amount of compute resources, including CPU, memory, and storage.
  • Compute Units (CUs) measure the compute power within your Fabric Capacity, with higher SKUs offering more CUs. These CUs are utilized by various Fabric workloads for data processing and computations.

Power Fabric and Pro License

  • Pro License: Enables users to create, share, and collaborate on Power BI content, making it perfect for individual users and small teams.
  • Fabric capacity: Offers dedicated resources for advanced workloads, supporting features such as large dataset handling, paginated reports, and AI capabilities. It is essential for organizations with more demanding data processing requirements.

BYOK License

  • To utilize BYOK for encryption, a Premium capacity license is required. BYOK is not supported with a Pro license.

I means Power BI Premium per capacity is phrasing out, then if we wants to use BYOK, what license should we purchase?

Hi @pennyhoho117,

The BYOK feature requires a dedicated Premium resource for encryption. To enable BYOK, you will need to upgrade from a Power BI Pro license to a Power BI Fabric capacity (F SKU). This feature is supported across all SKU tiers and is available starting from the F2 tier.
