Power BI Premium capacity cost sharing

Hello,

i have a question regarding Power BI Premium capacity costs. In our company we have 4 capacities  2 of P2 and  2 of P3.  Withion our organization there are lot of business units that have workspaces assigned to these capacities. lets say One P3 capacity is shared by 50 different business units. fo rbilling purpose, they want to charge each of the business unit according to their usage. So, how should we share the cost charges among all the business units. What factors should we consider like dataset size, use of ram etc?

Hi @Anonymous ,

When you subscribe to Power BI Premium P3, you will have a SKU with 100T capacity node, 32 cores in total, and 100G of RAM, which are shared by 50 departments, and regarding capacity cost sharing, I have the following ideas, it depends on you.
Under normal circumstances, there should not be 50 departments all users at the same time, so RAM and cores, in fact, are not in the scope of consideration, and the cost of sharing by department, you can follow the two options below.
1. By the number of users in the department to be divided. The total number of users of Premium in 50 departments should be aggregated, and the monthly cost of Premium should be divided by the total number of users of Premium in 50 departments, and the result should be multiplied by the number of users in each department, which is the cost of each part.
2. In the above scenario, there is a situation where there are 100 users in department A who need to use Premium, but only 1 report is developed per month in the whole department A. In department B, only one user uses Premium, but this user develops 100 reports per month. According to the above kind of scenario, the people in department A may be dissatisfied. In the case of Scenario B, the cost is shared according to the capacity used by each department.
You can also combine the two options and use the above two options in proportion to the total cost. I hope this is helpful.

Hey @Anonymous ,

MSFT is current working on this, here you will more details: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform-release-plan/2021wave2/power-bi/chargeback-reporting-power-bi-premium-administrators

Used RAM / day is something I would use

Dataset size is difficult as Premium on Gen2 provides a different approach then Gen1

Hopefully, this helps to tackle your challenge.

Regards,

Tom
