Power BI Premium Set-up Question

Hello

We currently use Power BI Pro licensing at my organisation. We recently have rolled out a Databricks set-up for our data platform. I had a question around connecting this to Power BI. I was thinking of putting data assets all into 1 (or a couple) workspace and in that workspace I was wondering if I could:

  • Upgrade the service account that does the refresh to use Premium licensing
  • Upgrade the workspace to be a premium service account

We currently have direct queries but I want to use a refresh/cache. I don't think we can do this with Pro because of the limitations in volume. So I wanted to get feedback/help on:

  • Can we upgrade select workspaces to use Premium and a Service Account only? And if we do this, can everyone still point to that data and use it with just Pro licensing (hub and spoke model).
  • When we use the API to refresh Power BI datasets, we get "wrong media type" error returned in the API response. Would that be because a dataset is a direct query and not a refresh/cache dataset?
  • What is the cost (retail standard pricing) to have 1 Service Account use Premium and 1 workspace to place those datasets?
  • What (if any) are the limitations for data caching/refreshing with Premium licensing on a workspace and datasets within it? As a point of reference looking to do at the moment 1 refresh daily and we have some datasets that have a few GBs of volume on them.

Hi @ryan_aicd ,

1. You could upgrade your Power BI account license from Pro to PPU, Power BI provide two type license(Pro and PPU) for per user

2. You could host your workspace in Pro, PPU,Premium per capacity license

3. Direct Query dataset need not do data refresh, because Power BI doesn't import the data, you don't need to run a data refresh, instead, the dataset returns results from the underlying data source whenever a report or dashboard queries the dataset. Power BI transforms and forwards the queries to the data source.

6. Data refresh rate:

   Pro: 8/day

   PPU: 48/day

   Premium: 48/day

7. The maximum storage capacity for Power BI depends on the type of capacity you have. For workspaces in shared capacity, there’s a per-workspace storage limit of 10 GB. However, if you’re using Premium Per User (PPU), the storage limit is 100 TB. When you’re using a Pro license, the total usage can’t exceed the tenant storage limit of 10 GB multiplied by the number of Pro licenses in the tenant. For workspaces in Premium capacity, there’s a limit of 100 TB per Premium capacity.
