Power BI Gateway for published reports not working, but import connections are.

I have been struggling for the last 2 days to get the reports with live connections (direct query) to work in the Power BI Service. Reports open in Power BI Desktop.

I have updated and restarted the Gateway, checked the accounts used to ensure they have access and all is correctly set up.

I did a test by creating 2 reports using the same Data Source from the Gateway - The import query successfully refreshes, but I cannot see the data for the one with Direct Query.

Hi @Anonymous,

There could be several reasons why you are unable to see data for the report with Direct Query. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take:

  1. Check the credentials: Make sure that the credentials used to connect to the data source are correct and have the necessary permissions to access the data. You can test the connection by opening the data source in Power BI Desktop and selecting the Direct Query option.

  2. Check the data source permissions: Verify that the account used by the gateway has the necessary permissions to access the data source. Check with the data source administrator to confirm that the necessary permissions are in place.

  3. Check the Gateway configuration: Ensure that the gateway is configured correctly and is running. Verify that the data source is added to the gateway and is set up for Direct Query. Also, go to Power BI Desktop on the Gateway server and try to connect to the same data from there, if it fails, then there is something wrong that must be fixed.

  4. Check the report settings: Ensure that the report is set up for Direct Query and that the correct data source is selected. Verify that the report is not filtered or has any other settings that could prevent data from displaying.

  5. Check the data model: Verify that the data model is set up correctly and that the required tables and columns are included in the report. Ensure that the relationships between the tables are correctly set up.

If you have tried these troubleshooting steps and are still unable to see data for the report with Direct Query, you may need to contact Power BI support for further assistance.
