Power BI Gateway + Redshift ODBC (Browser Azure AD OAuth2) → Timeout Error

Hi everyone, I’m running into an issue when using the On‑premises Data Gateway that connects to Amazon Redshift via ODBC. I’m hoping to check if anyone has faced a similar challenge, or has advice o...

    Hi rojan_maharjan ,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

You’re running into a known and expected limitation with the On-premises Data Gateway + ODBC + browser-based Azure AD OAuth combination.

The ODBC support in the On-premises Data Gateway documentation indicates that ODBC connections through the gateway support only non-interactive authentication methods such as Windows and Basic authentication. Browser-based or interactive OAuth flows are not listed as supported for generic ODBC data sources, which implies this scenario is not supported.

The Add or remove a gateway data source documentation explains that OAuth2 authentication is supported only for specific, built-in connectors. It also notes that some authentication methods that work in Power BI Desktop are not supported when using the Power BI service through the gateway.

    Hi rojan_maharjan

This behavior is due to a limitation of the On-premises Data Gateway rather than an issue with your Redshift or DSN setup. The gateway runs as a headless Windows service and does not support interactive or browser-based OAuth flows, so while Azure AD OAuth2 works in Power BI Desktop (where a browser prompt can complete the login) and when testing the DSN directly on the gateway machine, it cannot complete that same federated authentication when the connection is created or refreshed from the Power BI Service. As a result, the authentication attempt never finishes and eventually surfaces as a generic timeout error. In practice, ODBC connections through the gateway require a non-interactive authentication method, such as database credentials or a supported non-browser IAM/service-principal style flow. Until interactive OAuth is supported by the gateway, Azure AD browser-based authentication for Redshift over ODBC will not work from the Power BI Service, even though it works locally.
