Power BI Gateway Data Source connection flaky

Hi,

 

The gateway data sources were all working consistently for a long time then suddently without making any changes the data sources stopped working but in a flaky way meaning one minute they might work and the next minute they don't and so so giving invalid connection credentials message even though that credential is valid and have been used for a while. I also tried with different users.

 

Has anyone seen that before.

    Actually we got past the gateway data sources errors now the connection is consistently successful

    Hi MayAS ,

     

    Are you receiving any error messages?  Also, have you updated the Gateway and Desktop version to the latest and greatest versions (as of this moment both have a June 2021 update).

     

    The June Gateway update seems to talk of this exact issue:

    Note : We identified a bug recently which applies only to Azure Logic Apps.  Using the the SAP connector for Azure Logic Apps with the first release of June gateway, may cause intermittent connectivity failures or may lead to corrupted/malformed data to be returned . June  gateway release 2  with version “3000.86.4” addresses this problem.

      Hi,

       

      Yes we have updated the data gateway to the latest version.

      We have two types of data sources, SQL and Analysis Services and both data sources are giving issues.

       

      One source giving this error (SQL data source)

      The on-premises data gateway's service account failed to impersonate the user.

      SQL Analysis Services data source is giving this error.

      Invalid connection credentials.

      We already tried restarting the gateway, rebooting nothing helped.

      Locally there are no issues connecting to SQL or Analysis Services. Issue only from the Power BI service. We tried different users to connect. Didnt work. It's always the same, it connects one moment and then faileds next minute. Not consistent.

        Hi MayAS ,

         

        The real problem is it being inconsisten because it becomes so hard to replicate or even to nail down. 

         

        I am thinking that because this is the Service and becasue it is intermittent that you open a ticket with Microsoft and have them run traces while it runs to see where the problem might lie.

    Hi MayAS ,

     

    Did you use kerberos for your gateway?  

     

    Follow these steps to solve the issue.

    1. Set up an SPN for the on-premises gateway.
    2. Set up constrained delegation in your Active Directory.
