Power BI Gateway Configuration

Our Power BI Gateway Configuration was accidently deleted, so we lost all our working connections.  We followed the steps to update the Power BI Gateway program, create a new Power BI Gateway Configuration and restored the connection.

What I want to know, is there a way to make a Backup of the Power BI Gateway Configuration and then restore the Backup should this ever happen again.  I understand that a new Backup would be taken at least weekly so that we would have most of the connections.

For our customer we apply a procedure made of Powershell scripts that backup the configuration files of the gateway and the installer before upgrading in this way you can restore it in case of disaster. Obviously recovery key is needed and you have to take care of it.

Hi @u750430

As others have mentioned, a backup is not possible.

I recommend posting an idea here: Fabric Ideas - Microsoft Fabric Community

If it gains traction, maybe the product team will develop it.

When a gateway configuration is deleted, all connections must be recreated manually. Microsoft does not provide an export/backup file for gateway settings.

Hi @u750430 ,
This is a very common concern, and unfortunately the answer is partly yes and partly no.

What you CAN back up

1. Gateway Recovery Key

This is the only supported backup mechanism.

When the gateway is installed, you create a Recovery Key.

If you still have this key:

  • You can restore the gateway on a new machine

  • All registered data sources remain available

  • No need to re-enter credentials

If you lose the recovery key:

  • There is no way to recover connections

Action now

  • Store the recovery key securely:

    • Password manager

    • Azure Key Vault

    • Secure internal documentation

You cannot backup data source connection and credentials

Hii @u750430

Power BI Gateway does not support backing up and restoring gateway configurations or data source connections. There is no export/import or scheduled backup feature available. The only supported recovery option is using the same recovery key to migrate or restore the gateway to an existing cluster. If the gateway is deleted without the recovery key, all data sources must be recreated manually. To avoid this risk, Microsoft recommends using a gateway cluster (multiple nodes) and securely storing the recovery key, as VM or file backups do not restore gateway connections.
