Power BI Embedded – Licensing + SKU questions

Hi all,

We have a customer with 3x Power BI Premium Per User (PPU) licenses.

They embedded a report for ~20 internal users, but recently hit the embed token limit that PPU provides, so users can no longer view the report.

We are considering moving to Power BI Embedded (A-SKU) so those ~20 internal users can access the report without needing Power BI Pro licenses.

Questions:

  1. If we switch to Embedded, do report developers still need PPU, or would Power BI Pro be enough?

  2. Which Embedded SKU would be required for this scenario?

  3. I understand A1 supports datasets up to ~3 GB, correct?

  4. What else should we take into account?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi ablarrosa8,

for a 9GB dataset, you are correct that an A3 capacity is needed, however I believe users only need pro licenses to develop, not PPU.

  • Hi ablarrosa8,

1: I believe a pro license will be enough to develop the reports once you have an embedded capacity.

2: This depends on your model size and needs.

3: This is correct, you can see the details about the different capacities here: Pricing - Power BI Embedded | Microsoft Azure

4: I think you have thought about the important things. One thing to mention, since you currently have PPU, are you using any of the premium features? If so, they will not be available in the A sku capacity.

  • PD: Imagine this scenario: dataset is 9GB. That means customer would need Sku Embedded A3 (10 gb dataset limit) and also PPU per user to develope?
