Power BI Azure map legend colour issues

Hi there,

I wonder if anyone could shed some light on the Power BI Azure maps legend colours issue.

Azure Maps visual displays correct polygon colours in Power BI Desktop and Service. However, after publication, the legend colours shown in Power BI Service do not match the manually configured data colours. The map rendering itself remains correct, but the generated legend uses a different colour palette and cannot be manually corrected within the Service.
It worked ok before, but not now (something changed?)

This is a recent bug, we are in the process of fixing. Please post to Issues forum here next time, we scan those more frequently. This forum is more for help, not for product issues / possible bugs.

      Hi there,

Many thanks for the update. I did notice that it briefly worked, but I checked it again now and the colours are all over the place again? Do we have any update on this?

Hi, where is this issue forum and the specific thread regarding this issue please? thank you

  • We are having the same issue. Power BI prodcuts that have been live for years have suddenly lost the assigned colours in the Azure maps. Desktop files are fine but online verison colours are not correct and saving and repblishing desktop files isnt fixing the issue. We are not aware of any changes our end so wondering if something has been updated or changed by microsoft?

Any idea how to resolve this asap would be apreciated as our maps are very confusing for users at present.

  • I have the same issue. In all my reports, the legend of the Azure Map visual shows the default colors of my theme. I can change the color and change it back online to fix it, but when I re-publish the report this problem returns.

Hi, I cannot find any solution for this problem so far. The colors are different. The correct colors in PBI Desktop (right) an the wrong colors in PBI Service after publishing (left). Any other ideas to fix this Problem?

    Hi Saul_Ring,

    Thanks for sharing the details.

According to the official documentation, the Azure Maps visual can be created and viewed in both Power BI Desktop and the Power BI Service. When a categorical field is added to the Legend bucket, a Data colors section becomes available in the Format pane, allowing you to adjust the colors assigned to each category.

The Power BI troubleshooting documentation notes that series color assignment can vary for dynamic series in Power BI visuals, depending on factors such as filters or the order in which data is displayed. To maintain color consistency, Microsoft recommends explicitly defining the color for each series within the report's formatting settings.

Could you please share a few more details about how the Legend field is configured in your Azure Maps visual? This will help us better understand your scenario.

For more details, please refer to the below official documentation:

I hope this helps. Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
    Thank you.

      Hi there,

In power Bi desktop version I added "value" column to the legend bucket. Values range from 1 to 10 and I assigned colours to each value. The dasboard is published in a website and it worked fine since last October until now. I also added a separate table with values 1-10 and hex codes for each colour. I also tried to change colours in PBI service, but everytime you assign a colour to a value they revert to original.

  • We've started experiencing the same issue with Azure maps and the service.

Azure Maps visual in Power BI Service has a regression affecting manually assigned categorical legend colors. Changes made under Filled Map Layer → Fill are correctly applied to map fills but are not consistently reflected in the legend. The legend briefly updates before reverting to a stale color assignment. Issue does not reproduce in Power BI Desktop and can be reproduced in a newly created report with a simple dataset.
