Hi!
I have developed a custom data connector for connecting to our graphQL API. Refreshing from Power BI Service now works fine through an On-premises Data Gateway installed on my machine.
However, since the API is exposed on the web, and not just on premises, shouldn't it be possible to get Power BI service to connect to it directly without the on-prem gateway? If possible, how do I set it up? And if not possible, is there a clear reason why?
It would be nice to not be dependant on having the gateway running somewhere.
Thanks in advance for any insight on this!

No as the custom connecter is not available at Microsoft servers, it has to be hosted with On-Premise Gateway then only you will be able to use for refreshing your reports
you can select and use custom connector in power bi service. For more details, please refer to https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-gateway-custom-connectors

I see, thanks for the clarification.
And yes, this approach is what I have up and running already. So then it's all good!
